my (every poorly-lit) this-is-how-I-feel-right-now contribution to the ideal bookshelf conversation. There’s a lot missing––Babel, McEwan, Bolaño, Didion, Gaitskill––but I could survive on a desert island with these, easy.
There are two Chris Adrians, which I didn’t realize until after but is probably about right. Because he’s a favorite author, and because the copies of these books are particular favorites––they both have Shakespeare & Co’s kilometre zero stamps on the title page; I read 90% of The Children’s Hospital while sitting on the Seine; A Better Angel was signed by Adrian (he read at the store two days after I flew out), and hand-delivered to me in NYC a month later by a good friend. Still owe her for that.
Also, re: Kelly Link. Would’ve preferred to put Stranger Things Happen up here, but can’t find my copy because I loaned it out and the person (of course) kept it. Which is the third time that’s happened. Also, this is like my fourth copy of Jesus’ Son, for that same reason.
I don’t think I’ve mentioned A Death in the Family on here before. I love that book.
